An Interview With Rekuru

Rekuru

January 26, 2010 - Last Saturday, FiRESIGN interviewed with Jeremy Kenarangi of Rekuru, a comprehensive community of Japanese popular culture.

Derukui (FiRESiGN TiMES)

Derukui

Seven years ago, following the production of FiRESiGN's first demo CD, "Rise From the Ashes," an independently published and printed newsletter was distributed throughout New York's East Village. Its name was FiRESiGN TiMES; its purpose... to introduce and inform any and all interested parties about FiRESiGN and their music. Today, with help from a dedicated staff of digital volunteers, another promotional publication has materialized; Derukui: FiRESiGN's new offical online newsletter.

*** Update: November 4, 2009 - Production of Derukui has been suspended until further notice.

A Clockwork Orange

THE FiRESiGN TiMELiNE

1997 FiRESiGN begins as a solo project by its lead vocalist Aya. Originally from Hiroshima, Japan, Aya studied voice at Boston's Berklee College of Music before relocating to New York in 2000.

2001 Masaki, former vocalist of E.Z.O. from Sapporo, Japan, opting for change in instrument, signs on as FiRESiGN's bassist and co-songwriter. Later that year, the duo released their first CD single, "Rise From the Ashes" in memory of the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks and in tribute to the spirit of post 9/11 New Yorkers.

2002 FiRESiGN is ranked among the top 18 by New York's local Japanese newspaper "American Dream," during a contest to discover the best music groups in the New York area. Since then, core members, Aya and Masaki, alongside an assortment of musical mercenaries in the positions of guitarist and drummer, have played a number of local venues such as Acme Underground, Continental, Trash Bar and Mean Fiddler.

2007 FiRESiGN a duo once more, releases their first LP entitled Anger Management. After the initial success of that album's release Aya and Masaki enlisted the aid of two more instrumental interns who would accompany them as they continued in their musical expressions of mutual experience.

2009 FiRESiGN participates in a metal event called "Genki Shock," at Club Europa in Brooklyn. The event was an unprecedented success, as the band played to a full house of about 400 people.

2010 FiRESiGN ends its long-awaited search for a permanent third member with the induction of Kim, a self-disciplined guitarist from Hong Kong, China who has been performing in New York since 2007. "Kim's polished shredding and composing skills, are a breath of fresh air; stoking the flames of FiRESiGN, inspiring us to reach even greater heights." - Aya

2011 FiRESiGN makes it to the finals at the J&R sponsored competition, The Next Big Metal Band. Celebrity judges for the event included Anthrax bassist, Frank Bello.

FiRESiGN is currently in the process of producing their second LP.

Aya - Vocals

FiRESiGN's front-woman and founder hails from Hiroshima Japan; where she established herself in earlier years as a writer of traditional poetry. In the early 90's, however, she began merging metrical composition with a budding musical ability and supplementing it with song. Eventually this equation led to her enrollment at Berklee College of Music, in Boston. Afterwards, Aya migrated to New York where she underwent additional vocal training with industry icon Don Lawrence, who coincidentally trained her then future band-mate Masaki, several years earlier.

Masaki - Bass

Influential in the 80's as the voice of Japanese metal, Masaki has in recent years returned to his once-avocationally-only interest; the bass-guitar. Originally, from Hokkaido Japan, he has resided in New York since the early 90's. However, it was not until a reassessment of his role in metal music in the new millennium that he met Aya and subsequently contributed to FiRESiGN's reformation. Although, the subject of much conjecture and criticism, his decision has ultimately aided his development as a musician; allowed him the freedom to experiment creatively.

Kim - Guitar

Rarely do you find a professional guitarist whose talent and abilty is not over-shadowed by the posturing of his performance persona. A recent recruit and welcome addition to the FiRESiGN family, Kim's disciplined disposition seems to stray from the oft-expected ostentation exhibited by less serene six-stringers. His controlled, calm exterior often belies the intensity of his obsession. Raised in Hong Kong, China, he relocated to New York in the early 90's, where he has since learned the importance of practice and patience for developing his skills as a musician.

Kenji - Drums

Experience is also an important factor; essential to a musician's development and over-all confidence on stage. This is something that FiRESiGN's fourth and final member knows all about. Kenji, a native of Ishikawa, Japan, has performed with many different artists since he first began drumming, over 20 years ago. Arriving in Seattle, Washington in 1986, he soon after discovered a passion for percussion that would bring him east years later, in the early 90's, to study at Boston's Berklee College of Music before finding himself here in New York.
